About

Strong Schools for Alameda 2020 is a grassroots organization of parents, teachers and community leaders leading the campaign to pass Measure A to attract and retain quality teachers and provide our students with the outstanding education they deserve. We believe that behind every great student is a great teacher and that in order to keep our schools strong, we need to provide our educators the tools they need to support our students.

About Measure A

Alameda’s great teachers and excellent schools make our community a great place to live. Many families move to Alameda for our strong neighborhood schools, because they know their child will receive a strong education from a great teacher.

Alameda’s Teachers and Staff Among the Lowest Paid in the County

Alameda loses approximately 20% of its teachers every year to other school districts because our neighbors offer higher pay and stronger benefits.

Many teachers have to take on second or even third jobs to support their families.

Less than half of Alameda’s teachers can afford to live here, with many commuting long hours every day.

Attract and Retain Excellent Teachers to Keep Our Students on the Path to Success

To ensure that our teachers are able to stay in Alameda classrooms, the AUSD Board of Education unanimously voted to place Measure A on the March 3, 2020 ballot. A Yes vote on Measure A will support our local teachers and protect our high-quality education by:

  • Attracting and retaining excellent teachers and employees

  • Sustaining strong instruction in core academic programs like reading, writing, math, arts and sciences

  • Supporting teachers and counselors in keeping struggling students on the right track

  • Making teachers’ and employees’ salaries and benefits competitive with neighboring districts

  • Supporting music and arts teachers and staff

  • Helping teachers and counselors prepare students for 21st-century jobs and careers

Strict Fiscal Accountability

  • All funding from Measure A will only be used to pay teachers and other educational employees and cannot be used for any other purpose

  • Annual audits and independent citizen oversight will be required

  • No money can be taken away by the State

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I support our schools?

Alameda’s great teachers and excellent schools make our community a great place to live. Many families move to Alameda for our strong neighborhood schools, because they know their child will receive a strong education from a great teacher. Whether or not you have school-age children, keeping our schools strong keeps our community strong.

Why do we need Measure A?

Despite the success of our schools, AUSD’s teachers and staff are the second lowest paid in the entire county. Teachers and school staff are critical to the success of our students. Science teachers help prepare our students for cutting-edge jobs of the future. Counselors ensure that our students are ready to excel in college or work after graduation. Support staff help keep struggling students out of trouble and on the right track. Simply put, behind every great student is a great teacher. Yet with its current resources, our District is struggling to attract and retain the best qualified teachers.

How does this affect our teachers? What about our students?

Many of our employees have to take on second or even third jobs to support themselves and their families. What’s more, less than half can afford to live on the Island, with many commuting from faraway communities each day. That’s compared to nearly 80% who lived in Alameda less than 10 years ago. The reality is that, every year, AUSD loses nearly 20% of its teachers and staff to other school districts, largely because our neighbors offer higher compensation and stronger benefits. Our students deserve highly qualified, experienced teachers. Attracting and retaining highly qualified teachers and staff is the best way to provide an excellent education and services to our students. Without competitive pay, teachers will continue to leave, and our students and community will pay the price.

How will Measure A help solve this problem?

A Yes vote on Measure A will provide $10.5 million annually in dedicated, locally controlled funding that legally can only support AUSD teachers and school staff. Supporting our teachers means supporting our students and a Yes vote on Measure A will:

  • Attract and retain excellent teachers and employees
  • Sustain strong instruction in core academic programs like reading, writing, math, arts and sciences
  • Support teachers and counselors in keeping struggling students on the right track
  • Make teachers’ and employees’ salaries and benefits competitive with neighboring districts
  • Support music and arts teachers and staff
  • Help teachers and counselors prepare students for 21st-century jobs and careers

Are fiscal accountability provisions and taxpayer protections included in Measure A?

Yes, Measure A includes mandatory accountability features, including:

  • The revenue from Measure A can only be used to pay teachers and other district employees and cannot be used for any other purpose
  • Annual audits and independent citizen oversight will be required
  • No money can be taken away by the State

How much will Measure A cost?

The measure will cost $0.265 per building square foot, capped at $7,999. For the average homeowner, that will be roughly $420 per year. If approved, Measure A will be in place for seven years.

What if I’m a senior living on a fixed income?

Senior citizens aged 65 and over are eligible for an exemption from the cost of Measure A and can apply for one by contacting the District.

Is Measure A the only option? What has AUSD already done to address this issue?

We know that we cannot rely on the State or other local agencies to provide the level of funding needed. A dedicated local funding source is the only option to provide our teachers with the resources they need to support our students. Additionally, the District has taken many proactive steps to address this issue, including cutting $3.2 million from academic programs in 2018-2019, reallocating 10% of District Office’s budget directly into the classroom every year and redirecting another $3 million this year from existing programs to support teachers. Even with these proactive steps, AUSD salaries remain about 11% below the county average. The District has shown that it is committed to finding additional areas to reduce expenditures. This belt tightening, in combination with Measure A, will allow us to compete with surrounding districts to attract and retain the best teachers and staff.

When will Measure A appear on the ballot?

Measure A will be on the ballot on March 3, 2020. Absentee voters will receive their ballots in the mail in early February.

How many Yes votes do we need to win?

Measure A must be supported by two-thirds of those who vote on it. That’s why we need to run a strong campaign with hundreds of community volunteers and supporters.

How can I get involved?

There are many ways that you can help. You can endorse Measure A, write a check, knock on doors and make phone calls, to name a few.
